【short story】The Cretaceous Guardian Dragon

Fantasy

One summer day, a boy named Haru discovered a small bone fragment on a hillside behind the local museum. He was participating in a fossil excavation event, where most kids unearthed ammonites or shells. But Haru’s eyes locked onto a faintly glowing white bone.

“Is this… a dinosaur’s?”

The moment he touched it, the world turned upside down.

The sky split open, a ringing filled his ears—and suddenly, Haru stood in a vast white wasteland. Towering before him was a massive dragon with wings outstretched, its body glowing like starlight—translucent, crystalline, otherworldly.

“You are the one who awakened me.”

The dragon spoke in a deep, gentle voice.

“I am Shell=Garde, guardian dragon of the Cretaceous, protector of this world since ancient times.”

His soul had awakened from a slumber of tens of millions of years, stirred by Haru’s touch. Back when Earth was young and dinosaurs roamed, Shell=Garde and his kin fought to protect the land from a falling “black star” that threatened annihilation.

But they failed. Their bodies turned to stone, and only their souls were left to be entrusted to the future.

“The black star stirs once again. In your time, you’ve seen signs of ruin—haven’t you?”

Haru thought of it: climate change, extreme weather, ecosystems unraveling. The world was beginning to fall apart.

“What can I do?”

“You have the power to connect memories. To protect this world, you must help me find the ‘Key.’”

And so began the journey of a boy and a dragon.

With Shell=Garde’s power, Haru could access the world’s “memories”—the past and present etched into fossilized bones, extinct creatures, ancient ruins. Each site led them further.

A great canyon echoing with the dinosaurs’ final roars. A frozen cave holding the sorrow of the Ice Age. And at last, the place where the black star first fell—an abyss deep beneath the ocean.

There, Haru discovered the Core of Memory—the final record left by the dinosaurs. It held a song—a prayer—for Earth’s rebirth.

But before they could awaken it, an enemy appeared: Nox, emissary of the black star.

“Fools. Extinction is evolution. Those who cling to memories deserve to fade into the past.”

Nox commanded the forces of darkness, accelerating the end of the world.

Terrified, Haru stood his ground.

“We won’t forget. The memory of life is what shapes the future!”

At his cry, Shell=Garde blazed with light. The souls of the ancient dragons responded, appearing like stars in the sky—resplendent, radiant.

In the final battle, Nox was sealed away into the realm of memory. A new wind began to blow across the world.

When Haru awoke, he was back at the dig site. The bone in his hand looked like an ordinary fossil.

But the sky was clear. The breeze was warm.

“Thank you, Shell=Garde.”

He smiled softly.

From that day on, Haru would live as a “keeper of memory,” carrying the promise he made to a guardian dragon of the Cretaceous.
